"I just wanted to let you know what a marvelous product
Website-Watcher is. It does its thing, day after day, quietly
and reliably. Every 15 minutes, it checks that all the major
pages on my different web sites work correctly. Since I work as
an affiliate, i.e. I promote products for other companies, I
need to be sure that all my links are functional all the time.
It's also important for me to know about any changes to the
landing pages "my" customers are taken to. Website-Watcher
currently verifies almost 100 external links for me every day
and warns about any availability problems or content changes.
Imagine doing that manually.
I'm also using Website-Watcher to learn about updates to all
the different software tools I use as a developer (including
www.aignes.com of course). This way I'm always aware when
there's a new release.
The latest thing I use it for is quality assurance for
website scripts. When you work a lot with PHP or JavaScript,
you start to worry that any change to your script could make it
fail in some other end. For this reason I've created a number
of very simple test pages that together use almost every aspect
of each script. One very simple example is at
http://common.webmasterangel.com/tracker_affiliateUrl.php?rp=1.
This page tests a URL generation script written in PHP. Of
course you can't see the script itself since it runs on the
server, but Website-Watcher can still use this URL to
continuously monitor that the script is producing the expected
results. When I'm making changes to the script I can manually
run tests via Website-Watcher, or just wait for the next
automatic test.
There are several positive effects of this. First of all, as
I developed the testing page, I had to go through the script
carefully and create a test case for all the things it does.
During this run-through, and during the subsequential testing
with Website-Watcher, I found two really obscure programming
errors and one major design error. Second, I can now be sure
that the script produces exactly the same results, regardless
of what changes I'm applying. If it doesn't, Website-Watcher
lets me know. Third, there are other things that can cause a
script to fail. If my hosting operator switched to a new PHP
implementation, my scripts could start to fail. With
Website-Watcher I know about these things, all the time.
For testing web sites I previously considered specialized
testing applications, but they are rather expensive and for me
they're mostly overkill. Instead, I now use the macro recording
facility in Website-Watcher to generate simple testing scripts
that can be played back and verified every day to check that
the major paths into and through my sites work as they should.
It's amazing how many things you have built into this
product. It's also amazing that unlike many other things in the
Internet world, Website-Watcher never breaks. It just keeps
working. Must be an Austrian thing...
